Past Presenters and Award Recipients
9th Annual Capitol Graduate Research Summit (CGRS)

The following graduate students were selected as the top 10 presenters from Research and the State (held on October 31, 2011). These students will be presenting their research posters at the 9th annual Capitol Graduate Research Summit (CGRS) in Topeka on February 16, 2012. The CGRS is an annual showcase of research conducted by graduate students from Kansas State University, Wichita State University, the University of Kansas, and the University of Kansas Medical Center. Participants have the opportunity to present their research posters to state legislators and the Board of Regents. At the CGRS, two judges (one from academics and one from industry) selected the top two K-State presenters to receive a $500 scholarship sponsored by KansasBio.

The KRF is an annual showcase of scholarly research conducted by undergraduate and graduate students from all disciplines at K-State. This on-campus event provides K-State students an opportunity to share their research with the K-State community and to gain experience presenting their work in a professional setting.

Sessions and Awards
Undergraduate student research: In each of the undergraduate student sessions, K-State
faculty judges selected the top presenter to receive an award. These first place presenters
each were presented with a $100 gift card to the K-State Student Union and a plaque
recognizing their accomplishment to be displayed in the students' home departments
until the following year's event.

Graduate student research: In each of the graduate student sessions, with the exception of the Social Sciences, Humanities, and Education oral session, K-State faculty judges selected the top three presenters to receive awards. Gift cards to the K-State Student Union were awarded in the amount of $100 to first place presenters, $75 to second place presenters, and $50 to third place presenters. First place presenters were also presented with a plaque recognizing their accomplishment to be displayed in the students' home departments until the following year's event.

Graduate student interdisciplinary oral session and award: This year, in addition to the presentation sessions and awards listed above, the K-State chapter of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Association, sponsored an award for the graduate student research that best displayed the integration of knowledge and expertise from diverse disciplines. The award recipient received a $100 award and is eligible for Sigma Xi’s student travel award if the research will be presented at a professional meeting. The presenter will also be recognized at the annual Sigma Xi awards banquet in April.

Graduate Student Poster Session

Research and the State is an event at which graduate students present their scholarly research to the K-State community and discuss the implications their research has for important state-related issues: quality and cost of education, education outcomes, healthcare, economic development, bioscience, military relations and military families, roads and transportation, family stability, security, energy and alternative energy sources, technology, water, wind energy, tax policy, animal health, rural development, defense industry research, tourism (particularly in Flint Hills), school finance issues. K-State judges select the top ten presenters to represent K-State at the annual Capitol Graduate Research Summit (CGRS) in the spring. Research and the State is open to the K-State community.
