    Kansas background

    • 1976 -- The Stock Market Game was started by William B. Bennett at the Buffalo (NY) State College Center for Economic Education.

    • 1977 -- Kansas became the second state involved in the Stock Market Game. Processing was done at K-State on an IBM mainframe by the Computing Center (later renamed Computing and Network Services).

    • August 1989 -- K-State became a regional processing center, one of four in the nation. The SMG game was processed for 12-20 states, depending on how many teams were playing.

    • August 1989 -- Jim Olson, CNS applications programmer, wrote a software program to store SMG data on diskette and recreate it in the specified print format. It was used nationwide and saved thousands of dollars in postage every year. Jim eventually became known as "Mr. Stock Market" at national SMG symposiums due to his long-term support role.

    • May 1, 2000 -- SMG processing ended at K-State when the game moved to an electronic-only version and New Mexico State University began handling all the data. After 27 years, K-State's support role ended. The game continues to be popular with K-State students and Kansas citizens.
